On KKTC Exchange, Buy means the office buys your foreign currency. Sell means the office sells foreign currency to you. Choose the direction before you compare prices.
Start with the currency you give
If you give pounds, euros or US dollars to an office and receive Turkish lira, use the Buy column. The office buys your foreign currency. For the same amount and the same fees, a higher buy rate gives you more TRY.
If you give Turkish lira and receive foreign currency, use the Sell column. The office sells that currency to you. For the same foreign amount and the same fees, a lower sell rate costs you fewer lira.
These are the labels used by KKTC Exchange. On another service, check the currency pair and its definition of buy and sell. Do not select a price from the word alone.
Read the unit before the number
The app shows TRY for one unit of GBP, EUR or USD. GBP is pound sterling. EUR is the euro. USD is the US dollar. TRY is the Turkish lira. A GBP/TRY quote and an EUR/TRY quote refer to different foreign currencies.
For example, a hypothetical GBP buy rate of 60 TRY means that one pound produces 60 lira before fees. It does not mean that one lira buys 60 pounds. Write the units next to the numbers when you calculate a total.
Worked examples
The following numbers are examples, not current rates or office offers. They assume no fees and no rounding adjustment.
| Your action | Example rate | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sell 100 GBP | Buy: 60 TRY per GBP | 100 × 60 | Receive 6,000 TRY |
| Buy 100 GBP | Sell: 61 TRY per GBP | 100 × 61 | Pay 6,100 TRY |
| Spend 6,100 TRY on GBP | Sell: 61 TRY per GBP | 6,100 ÷ 61 | Receive 100 GBP |
The difference between 60 and 61 is the spread. In this example, selling 100 GBP and immediately buying 100 GBP back costs 100 TRY before fees. Reversing a transaction does not cancel its cost.
Compare the same transaction
- Choose GBP, EUR or USD on the rate comparison page.
- Decide whether you sell foreign currency or buy it.
- Sort the matching column.
- Open an office to check its quote time and address.
- Ask the office for the final amount after all fees.
A rate without an office update time has an unknown age. A recent collection time does not prove that every office changed its price. The site identifies old data, but it cannot reserve a displayed rate for you.
Use the calculator as an estimate
Select an office and a direction in the currency calculator. The result uses the selected quote. It does not include an undisclosed fee, cash availability, or a different rate that the office quotes when you arrive.
The conversion guide explains multiplication and division in more detail. The fees guide shows why a better displayed rate can produce a smaller final amount.
What a rate can tell you
An exchange rate expresses the price of one currency in another currency. The Bank of England explains this relationship. The examples above apply the app's own buy and sell definitions to that relationship.
A comparison helps you understand a quoted transaction. It does not predict tomorrow's price. Read the reference rate article before you compare a central bank figure with a commercial office quote.
This content gives general information. Confirm the transaction rate, fees and cash availability with the office.
