Compare the complete displayed amounts and conversion terms before you select a currency. Your card issuer may apply separate charges. A cash exchange rate does not determine your card payment cost.
Read the currency before the total
A payment screen can show more than one currency. Start with the purchase amount and the currency on the bill. Check that the terminal shows the purchase you intend to pay. If something differs, ask the business to explain it before you confirm.
A price written on a receipt and a converted amount shown by a terminal are not necessarily the same kind of information. Keep the original purchase amount visible in your comparison. Do not use a familiar currency symbol as the only reason to choose an option.
Understand the offered conversion
Visa's dynamic currency conversion guidance explains a merchant or ATM conversion into the cardholder's home currency. It says the display should provide both amounts, the rate, and added charges. The cardholder chooses whether to accept the conversion.
These points describe Visa's published guidance. They do not confirm the conditions of every card, terminal, or provider. Ask your own card issuer which conversion and fee rules apply to your account. Do not assume that declining a terminal conversion removes every possible issuer charge.
Compare complete amounts
The following figures are invented arithmetic examples. They do not describe a real card offer. Suppose the purchase is 1,000 TRY and the terminal offers a converted total of 25 GBP.
Implied conversion = 1,000 TRY ÷ 25 GBP = 40 TRY per GBP
That calculation describes the offered amounts. It does not establish whether 25 GBP is better than paying 1,000 TRY through your card issuer. You still need the issuer's applicable conversion terms and any separate charges. Do not subtract a markup twice if it already appears in the displayed total.
Ask before you accept
Check the original currency, the converted amount, and any added fee. If the screen does not explain an option, request the missing information. Keep control of the choice before approval. If you do not understand the conversion, do not approve it merely because someone says it is convenient.
The fees guide explains why total amounts matter. The app's reference-rate article explains another limit: a reference rate does not promise a transaction price. An exchange office's cash rate also does not promise your card's conversion rate.
Keep the payment record
Keep the receipt and the original bill. Compare the posted transaction with those records when it appears in your account. If you see an unexplained difference or a choice you did not make, contact your issuer promptly through its official support channel. Ask it about the applicable process and time limits.
For a trip budget, separate card purchases from cash exchange plans. The travel budget guide provides a simple method. Before a cash visit, use the office map guide.
Sources and limits
The conversion explanation refers to the Visa guidance linked above, checked on 13 September 2026. The arithmetic example is original. Your issuer and the displayed transaction terms determine the conditions for your payment. This article does not promise that one currency choice always costs less.
